The Sweet Hereafter is why I will forever love sarah polley. That is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Music isn't all about telling a story...it's about exploring emotion. Plus, you don't have to sit still to experience music...it's portable. Plus, a bad song wastes far less of your life than a bad movie. I'm not dissing movies, but give me music any day...and for a funny band...try Offspring. Anyone that starts a song with "My friend's got a girlfriend and he hates that bitch" has my undying respect...and plus, one of their songs contains the lyric "STUPID DUMB SHIT GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKER!!!" Poetry, man, poetry.

My parental trauma movie was Threesome. You'd think the title would give it away, except I had no idea what we were watching. Just sat down to watch a movie on cable with dad and oops, three people start sexing.

Atom Egoyan is one of my favourite directors. He's from my hometown. In fact when I was a kid my Mom bought a piano from his parents.

I can't HELP but love your honesty towrds music. It seems to be the biggest effing bandwagon EVER to say, "Music is my life." Good for you. (I would say 'rock on' but it would be lost on you)

i disagree with you but i can't deny that i fear you are right about us winning. however, i keep in mind that pittsburgh was 15-1 last season and i was one of many who didn't think it was possible that they wouldn't win the superbowl. and then your boys came in and wrecked it all. so who knows? they bounced back rather well and as long as our team stays relatively together, i think so will we.

You rent the movie hoping to see Mandy's rude bits and then the story sucks you in. Man I hate when that happens. You might like Trust by Hal Hartley.

I love Elias Koteas, he's a fabulous actor. I saw him in True West in New York a few years ago.

This will be annoying, but here it is. I'd just like to make the distinction between music and POP music. What you are describing is pop music. 2-4 minute songs that were popular once and played on a radio with the express intention of making some kind of top 10 list. Music describes everything from Gregorian chant until now, inclusive of, but not limited to, pop music. Told you it'd be annoying. Sorry. But I totally agree with anisettekiss that you're way cool for not being all "music is my FAVE!" However, if you are looking for truly funny music, man can I hook you up. If you have a PO Box or an address you feel comfortable sending me, I will send you a cd. Or, if you want, I can email you some mp3s. Ridiculously funny. As far as the movies go, they sound awesome, I'm Netflixing them and I can't wait to see them. Have you seen the Station Agent? It's another brilliant movie that not everyone would like. Just curious.

Humor is, indeed, subjective ... but if it conforms to at least two of the six humor elements (as outlined by Scott Adams of Dilbert fame) it will at least be easily identified as humor and at best be amusing on more than one level. I personally have never achieved better than, possibly, one and a third out of six.

Being a musician, I will respectfully agree to disagree with you, but only to the extent where you say that music isn't a good art form, or story-telling medium. I will say that most pop music today sucks (but not all). I don't listen to music on the radio anymore, just sports talk. All the music I listen to now is by online independant artists, and boy have I found some gems (I've found a lot of shit too). As far as movies, I love them. I don't have a lot of experience with Egoyan's films which I'm ashamed of because by all accounts, he's great to everyone except Canadians, who are notorious for not supporting their own until they've gain the respect and admiration of the rest of the world. By then they're crap. The BareNaked Ladies are a prime example of this phenomenon, some others include bands like Our Lady Peace and directors like Atom Egoyan. It's sad really that we need to look to outsiders to validate our artists.

Atom Egoyan is a great director, just watched "Where the Truth Lies" saw Exotica years ago. I dont agree with Al, unfortunately in Canada your movie will not be seen outside of major cities(Toronto,Vancouver,Montreal) unless it is a "block buster" or you happen to live somewhere where they have an indie movie theatre. Therefore Canadians are not exposed to his films and can only base their movie preferences on whats playing at the cineplex. Canadian films have never had that kind of distribution, as they are usually not backed by the same companies as huge block busters and fall into the independent catagory. Egoyan's films have been featured in the Toronto International Film festival and recieved great reviews. To say that Canadians dont support their own is silly, please PLEASE tell me when Barenaked Ladies and even more so Our Lady Peace were ever good? BNL did have some indie cred in their very early years and I applaude their HUGE success in the states. But Our Lady Peace simply are a horrible example of Canadian music. If you would like to enjoy some good Canadian music I highly recommend The Arcade Fire, Rufus Wainwright, Metric, Feist to name a few. All of who were rather big successes in Canada (for Canada) I could rant on about this subject for a year or two so Ill stop now. But my main point is that Our Lady Peace were always a crap band.

It's obviusly a matter of opinion, I loved Naveed (OLP's first album). Everything after it (after they hit it with Clumsy) was pop-rock-drivel. BNL's Gordon was a great record (for the time). It showed off their strong musicianship and their witty lyrics and their live shows were second to none. It took 10 years of them wallowing around the Canadian music industry before they were discovered by the masses, and for what? Brian Wilson? Probably the weakest song on that 10-year-old album. They've sucked ever since. I didn't say Canada hasn't had great successes, I just said that they aren't recognized until they've left the country and then come back as a success. It has gotten better, especially in music, but in other venues, like television and movies, we're still our own worst critics.

Thank you. It's a sad reality that you look for the rest of your life but each time you are clean it's a triumph. Too bad about the Pats. I don't know hoe we managed to lose the ball that much.

I like atom's earlier junk...like calendar (which features him and his wife, of course, taking crazy pictures of churches).

I saw Exotica a LONG time ago & really liked it but can't recall why. I love Atom, though. Sex movies with parents is total uncomfortable trauma & never fails when I am visiting my Dad.
