Nice story. I did think it was about you until you talked about the timeline of getting the dogs. Oops! Either way it was sad and I totally understand that kind of love for a pet. If that was a realife situation I don't think I would have paid for the operation either. 9 years is a long time for a dog. It might be more selfish to do the operation and keep the dog around, possibly in more pain and discomfort.
